Opening up the Lake House!

by Joe Toth

One of the fun parts of owning a lake house at Apple Valley Lake or any Ohio Lake for that matter is opening it up for the season. Unless you plan ahead, you might forget some tasks.  Here are a few tips to get the first weekend at the lake off to a good start.

Your Checklist

To make sure you don't forget anything, write down a checklist of everything you have to do before you leave home and what must be done when you arrive at the lake. It takes a little extra time, but a checklist is the easiest way to make sure you get everything done.

1. Contact the utility company and phone company to turn on your services. We have contact numbers right here for you
2. Get all your cleaning supplies, clothing, food, and all your family's needs together.
3. Make sure the insurance policies for your cottage, boat, trailer, and other documents you need are ready to go.

When You Arrive

1. Take inventory of your property. Check the property outside for any damage that may have occurred during the winter.
2. Check the phone and power lines.
3. Check the roof and chimney for damage.
4. Inspect the windows and screens.
5. Check the structure under the cottage including beams and posts.
6. Check the deck and see if it needs a fresh coat of paint or stain.

Indoor Inspection of the Cottage

It's important to check the ceilings for any water leaks and do the necessary repairs as soon as possible. You should inspect all windows for leaks and functionality, check cupboards and drawers for signs of mice and clean them thoroughly. Put out fresh sheets and blankets, fluff up the towels and you're ready to enjoy Apple Valley Lake for the next season.

A good once over cleaning

Open up all of the windows and air out the cottage! Its been several months so dust is going to build up. Sherrie's favorite sent at our lake house is lemon. She has tried them all and has found that Pine Sol Lemon is the best! Wipe down cabinets, floors and counter tops.  A quick once over will make things sparkle and smell fresh again.

Decorating Your Apple Valley Lake Home

by Sherrie Toth

lake home decor.jpg

Whether you’re enjoying the city life or living the lake life at Apple Valley Lake, you can decorate your home in such a way that makes you feel like you’re living at the lake regardless of where you’re physically located.

The following items are just SOME ideas that you can use in your home to give it that Lakeside feel.

Most of these items can be done for pennies on the dollar or better yet, FREE!

Please post pics of YOUR lakeside decor and share below!

Wooden Paddles- Do you have any of these laying around?  Are they collecting dust in your basement or attic?  Perhaps you’ve seen them at yard sales or secondhand shops.  Don’t pass these up!  You can paint them and distress them and hang them in your bathroom or in your living room.  They definitely can add a lake feel to any room.

Homemade wooden signs- These little gems can be made using any leftover wood.  You can stain the wood or paint and distress and then add on whatever sayings you want.  Here are a few  just to give you an idea:

woodsign.jpgThese signs can hang just about anywhere: on your dock, on your porch, the bathroom, the guest room, the list goes on!

Circular Mirrors- Mirrors can be found at almost ANY garage sale or thrift shop.  Just because you don’t like the border, don’t pass this up!  You can always repaint it!  Circular mirrors are great additions to your lake home because they give off a nautical feel.

Re-purposed items-

Clocks- if you have a clock that doesn’t serve its original practical use, consider attaching it to a plant stand and using it as a small side table for your porch or living room.  While this isn’t necessarily “lake” decor, it definitely is a cool upcycle idea.

Canoes- Canoes that aren’t able to be used on the water any more can certainly be upcycled.  I’ve seen them turned into anything from a small, contained garden to a shelf.  The possibilities are endless.  Google search “upcycled canoes” and explore!  Talk about a definite lake feel addition to your home.

Light Colors- Nothing makes you feel more like you’re in your happy place than light colors.  Light blue, white, warm yellow and light shades of gray all give a cool, ever-summer feel to your home.  Try a white base (walls, floors) and splashing bits of color via pillows and rugs.  If you’re gonna go dark in color, do it with purpose.  Creating a rustic look can’t happen on accident. It needs to be done with a calculated mind; otherwise, it will seem stuffy and will give the opposite feel of what you’re going for.

Safety First at Apple Valley Lake

by Sherrie Toth

safety first.jpg

Well, we think it’s safe to say that the warmer weather is well under way.  What a nice Memorial Day weekend we had here in Apple Valley.  Minus a few scattered showers here and there, Toth and Team can say with confidence that we couldn’t have asked for better weather.

As always, when the weather finally starts to cooperate with us (Thanks, Ohio!!), there are more people who are out on the lake and around to enjoy it, which makes the risk for accidents rise.  Apple Valley has put out a list of boating and water safety rules to regulate and prevent accidents that you might want to check out.  Toth and Team has also created a list of simple “things to remember” when enjoying the beautiful Apple Valley Lake.  And as always, accidents are just that-- ACCIDENTS.  No one intends for them to happen, but a lot of them can be avoided if we are aware of ourselves and our surroundings.

Things to Remember: Swimming

Learn How to Swim- one of the best ways to prepare yourself and your family is to take swimming lessons.  Most facilities offer lessons for people as young as six months old.

Appropriate Supervision- Most times, there are different ability levels in the group of people you may be with-- especially if children are involved (under which circumstance there should ALWAYS be supervision).  Make sure you know these abilities and can verify that the appropriate supervision is available. Always have weak swimmers wear a US Coast Guard approved life vests. Do not rely on water wings or floaties.

Know Water Depths- Unless you are 100% certain, always enter the water feet first-- especially if it’s unknown waters.  Appropriate diving depth is 9 feet.

Substances- It may seem like a no-brainer, but common sense isn’t always common.  Make sure you aren’t under the influence of alcohol or drugs while swimming.

Take a Course- A water safety/ CPR course never hurt anyone and you never know when you might need it!  You might not be anywhere near the water-- you could be out at a local restaurant and find someone in need of your life-saving skill!

Common Sense- I know we said it wasn’t so common, but if you have to second guess, then you probably shouldn’t do it. Always go with your first gut instinct.

Things to Remember: Boating

Have a Checklist- always have a handy dandy checklist on board and before you depart, make sure you’re able to check them off your list.

Life Jackets- Make sure that each passenger on board has a life vest available.

Follow the Rules- Sometimes we want to unleash our inner rebel and that’s just part of life, but let's not do that with water safety.  It’s ok to call a handful of Cheez-its a “serving” in order to “stick it to the man” if that’s how you want to channel your inner rebel; however, boat and water safety rules were created to keep everyone safe.  If you’re unsure of such rules, you can check the Apple Valley Property Owners’ Association Website for more details.

Substances- Drinking and driving is not limited to the roadways; be smart.

Common sense- Again.  Rules are not here to make us have less fun.  Just remember to follow your gut and we can all enjoy the lake together with minimal to no problems!

Do you have any other precautions that you and your family take while on the water?  Let us know in the comments below!

And if you haven’t found your happy place yet, please contact us so we can make that happen!
